Well, I’m working on my next book and I’m getting hung up on the name for my heroine. She’s Latina and she’s gutsy. She’s in a situation over her head, but in the name of family, she’ll tough it out. I’m tired of calling her “h” for heroine in my plotting notes. So, I’ve come up with a list of names. I do have a favorite I’m leaning towards. I’ve also rejected a few. Like stepping into a dress that you know is “the one,” I’m waiting for that punch of recognition that this is her name. It fits. It matches and nothing else could possible do. Let me know what you think of the names below. Do any work for you or not? And why or why not if you can explain. Sometimes it’s hard because there is no reason, only a feeling. I’ll take what impressions I can get. Feel free to offer some names of your own. 1…. Rosario |

Hey, Gabriella!
Jennifer seems to stick out of that list like a sore thumb. Tell me it’s only there for filler!
I am, of course, partial to Helena. Go figure. *wink*
But seriously… Rosario and Mercedes are women I’ve met in fiction before, and Rosario is always fat and rotund. Mercedes is efficient.
Yet that doesn’t mean you can’t bust a stereotype or two!
As for other names, I have NO idea at all. I’d go with Helene. Oops. Helena.

Susan–you’re cracking me up. A fat Rosario is not what I’m looking for.
Thanks everyone for your thoughts. It’s cool to see which names catch people’s attention and which ones don’t.

I like Soledad.

Add me to the list of votes for Soledad. To me, that sounds like someone who’s brave and loyal, someone I’d like to read about.
Plus–and I’m sure I’m not explaining it well–it’s ethnic in a strong rather than a sweet way.

For some reason I see Rosario as an older, rounder woman.
I like Gloria and Antonia.

My mom’s name was Eva – so it’s one of my favorites. Pronounced Ava (definitely sounds more Latina)
I’m partial to Soledad.
Will you let us know which one you choose?
Thanks for visiting my TT.

I’ve always liked Elena, pronounced with a short “e.” I’ve used Rosario for a character although everyone called her Rosie.

I love the names Elena (Lena) and Sofia.

Selma or Soledad jump out at me. Good luck with picking a name. I know what you mean about it being like a dress that has to fit just right!
Happy TT, and thanks for visiting my blog!

Ok, you asked for it.
So here are some thoughts on these names you listed:
Sandra is my name and I’ve never been all too fond of it. So, whatever. It’s a russian name, by the way (short for Alexandra).
Gloria, Celia and Antonia are nice enough names, but they don’t sound particularly latino to me.
Soledad is a bit of a cliche, don’t you think? A bit overused. Plus it sounds like an illegal mexican maid.
Sonia used to be a brand of margarine when I grew up, so I just can’t take that name seriously anymore.
Jennifer is a joke, right? Not even thinking of Ms. Lopez does that sound in any way latina-like.
Mercedes is a car (sorry, I’m german, can’t help it).
Linda is a blond, bland american wife.
With Selma I’m thinking of Hayek. If your heroine is hot and sexy, it wouldn’t be a bad choice, though.
That leaves Rosario, Elena and Eva as possibles. They’re all good names and picking your favorite is purely a matter of taste. I’d tend to Elena myself, but you have to see if it fits your girl. and the others were right, Rosario sounds like a fat lady. Don’t know why.
I hope that helped (at least it was fun to write). And I sincerely hope I didn’t offend anyone who actually wears any of these names!

I’ve applied a simple test to all the names on the list – can I hear them being yelled in a drunken way at a member of a hen party in a bar in the UK…
Helena, Selma and Soledad pass the test as not making me cringe at the though of being at the table next to that hen party.

I like #10 & #11 – good luck!!

I’m partial to Antonia…and while I’m at it, I love your name! Maybe in my next lifetime if I have any more!
Happy TT!

I like #10 Soledad. But how about Luz?

I have a name book and just looked in the Spanish section. Here are some options I liked: Florentina (blooming), Melisenda (sweet), Natalia (born at Christmas), Olivia (Olive), Raquel (lamb), Sara (princess), Serena (serene), Valentina (brave).
I have a character named Olivia, nickname Livvy.

Hi. I zipped over here from Skeezix the Cat’s blog … Love your list of names. I’ve always been fond of “Marisol” for a Latina name … My mom has a BFF named Marisol and my mom thought that her name translated to “Mary Sunshine” … Little did she know.

I love everyone’s comments. A few made me laugh like Mark’s reference to a hen party.
I was hoping that by doing this I’d find a name leap out at me. There seemed to be some leaning towards Soledad by several commentators, but then samulli compared the name to an illegal Mexican maid. Ouch!
I like the suggestions of Luz and a few others.
I do promise to let you all know what I choose, though it might not be right away. I also may end up trying a name out to see if it fits. There’s always find and replace if it doesn’t.
I really appreciate the help and all your opinions. Fascinating to see how certain names conjure up certain images. Scary too.
