How do you like your eggs?

Today is Easter and like most plans or life with kids it didn’t go as expected. Ds#1 woke up with a fever. So though the Easter bunny brought chocolate, the egg dyeing has been postponed. Not sure that’s such a bad thing. Then again they’ve got some cool kits nowadays. I picked one up that lets the boys paint, color or use stickers to decorate their eggs. When I was growing up it was vinegar, food dye and fingers that turned purple! Remember that?

I also say a kit that lets you suck out the insides with a straw (or something) and then decorate the remaining shell. I’m sure it’s supposed to be stupid proof. I usually fail those. Not to mention three little boys who range from ds#1: I can do it. I know how (I know everything); to ds#2, who is only an inch shorter than his two year older big brother and is going to pass me in foot size before he’s in fourth grade: I can do it. I won’t break it (yeah right); to ds#3, the baby with the big attitude: I’m going first. I can do it too (even if I have to climb over you two to do it). Oh yeah. Images of raw egg blowing up all over the dining room table and on the carpet nixed this nifty kit real quick.

Growing up though, Easter was always cool. We went to a huge buffet at a very nice restuarant after church. In the afternoon dad would hide the eggs outside and we’d spend a chunk of time racing all over trying to find our eggs. I even remember years where there was a prize egg worth a dollar. We won’t go into how many years ago that was, but out of curiosity, how much is an Easter egg going for these days?

Happy hunting to you all. Happy Easter. Happy Passover. Enjoy your time with family and friends. And I hope you make memories to carry away with you.

13 Ways I Am Green (or Trying to Be)
Thirteen Things about Being Green

Major reality check the other night when I saw a news report on the drought in Melbourne, Australia. They showed a family in which each person could hop in the shower for only three minutes, then out. The shower curtain was hung over a bucket to catch every last drop. Water from the gutters on the house was recycled in a tank. And around the neighborhood, officials with vests sporting Water Patrol across the back checked to see that everyone followed strict curfew rules or slapped residents with a fine.

In my city, they started a new campaign this year called, “Reduce, Refuse, Recycle.” As the words imply, the idea is to get you to reduce your consumption, refuse unnecessary waste, and to recycle where possible. So, here are 13 ways I’m trying to be “green”.

1…. I walk just about everywhere I can
2…. or take public transport (train, bus, taxi) when I can’t
3…. Recycle (paper, cardboard, bottles, cans, styrofoam trays)
4…. Recycle the bath water to be used in the washing machine (it’s a Japanese thing)
5…. Line dry all my clothes (no dryer)
6…. Turn off the original switch of appliances, such as the TV, at the end of the day
7…. Never turn down hand-me-downs
8…. Bring my own bag for groceries so I don’t need to use shopping bags
9…. Do my best to capture the spiders and put them outside (hey, that’s green, isn’t it?)
10…Very little food wastage in my house. Dh is fanatical about that. Leftovers are eaten the next day and the kids have to clean their plate or no dessert.

It’s not a bad list so far, but I know there are areas I could do better if I tried harder.

11…. Do better at conserving water and electricity. After seeing the situation in Melbourne, I’m sure I could do better. And if I could get my kids to remember to turn off the light when they leave a room (argh!)
12…. Learn how to kick the packrat habit. I hang on to stuff, thinking I might need it. ‘Course, right after I throw it away, I find a use for it. But really, we have too much stuff in a small space. I’ve got to get rid of a lot of it and
13…. Refuse to add more junk to the house and to teach the kids to do the same.

It’s like dieting. I need to slim down and stay slim. Hopefully, I can do a better job than I do with dieting. ;-) What about you? How are you trying to be green?
