Rockin Review

If You Could Only Choose Your Mother by Julie Harford
Review by Kevin Ferrall

Marvelous. If you’ve seen Spanglish, 10 things I hate about you, then prep yourself for a should- be-film story. If You Could Only Choose Your Mother by Julie Harford is not a groundbreaking piece, but it is impressionable.

To begin, the story is a teen romance telling of the protagonist’s growth in teen angst, peer pressure, and first love. I know we’ve all heard the plot before, but this is a definite must read. I, too, thought the title of the piece to be banal, but the phrase “Don’t judge a book by its cover” applies here. The contents of the book are appealing.

The beginning is very rocky, but as you continue reading the story it is polished into a beautiful diamond. I urge readers not to be swayed because at the end of the book the reader will be stunned. The trip of the protagonist’s life depicted in the story leaves one in awe.

I am a male full of testosterone and I must say read this book. If you’re male, female, old, or young this book will thrill you. Granted I am a male who is a sucker for romance movies, I think other males should take the time to read into this piece.
The matters reflected in the novel are serious matters teenagers experience often and the characters are so accurately portrayed you would think Julie had taken the life of a teenager and written it down on paper. Her characters are real, problematic, and humorous like life itself. Woven into dramatic moments of the piece are ingeniously entwined humorous points.

The only true complaint I have, besides the title and rough beginning, is that it wasn’t long enough. I wanted to read more after finishing, but in that thought I am also happy it didn’t go on. A story is a recording of a time in one’s life and this story follows the rule. The ending has the reader yearn for more, but still satisfying. But some parts could’ve been played out more like the annoying boy bothering the heroine. I think he could have bothered her more on other days so the moment of him being nice could have more impact. Look past these negative comments though because I don’t want to persuade readers to not the read the book.

If You Could Only Choose Your Mother is a refreshing teen read that the market has been lacking up to this point. This is a teen read must for any lovers of literature. I can not stress this enough to an audience, read this novel. I would recommend this to anyone. I will shout this to the heavens for people to understand. Julie Harford’s novel is perfect for middle/high school teachers trying to interest their students in books again. It is too adult for elementary students, but a true reader will love this regardless of age.

Rocking Review Wednesday

Undenied by Maya Banks

He’s no cow poke and she’s no milk maid. The talk is dirty, the scenes are raunchy and the conversation is titillating. I don’t know what it is about Ms. Banks novellas that have me giggling and feeling like a naughty little girl.

Maya Banks has done it again! Undenied is undeniably the best erotic novella I’ve read in a long time! A fun bunch of characters that immerse you in southern comfort and make you feel right at home. Serious yee-haw going on! Wes Hoffman is back in the third installment to the series and he is having an issue that darn breaks my heart. Her characters are so real that I wish I could hop into the book and help him out. But alas, Payton the heroine of the story does a great job of knocking boots and heating up my laptop.

The story is steamy, spicy and sweet like a good dish of General Tsao Chicken. Yummy delectable scenes of pleasure tossed in with a saucy talk and a dash of romance. Nice blend of erotica. I read the story in one sitting and like Chinese food I’m still hungry for more.

Four More Days

I leave on Thursday for Tokyo. Time has flown by so quickly. This vacation was about being with family and trying to relax. I’ve been stressed lately with stuff and I really needed this break. I feel like just when I’ve started to relax, it’s time to go back. I love it here and am going to miss it.

We’ve been to the beaches a few times and ate out way too much. My stomach can’t handle all those calories and portions. LOL! Tomorrow, we’re heading over to San Diego Bay where we’ll take the kids to view the Star of India and maybe do the carousel over at Seaport Village. Should be lots of fun.

I’m in part panic mode as I try to think of all the things I need to pick up before we leave. I’m probably not going to make it back next year and need to stock up on whatever I can. I usually like to get the kids Xmas gifts here too, but this year I haven’t managed to find much that catches my eye. I did pick up a few new authors at the bookstore for myself. Hopefully, I can discover a new series to get hooked on. I still have a bunch of ebooks that I’m dying to read once I get back. I so want a reader, but winced when I checked out the price. They sure aren’t cheap.

In any case, I plan on enjoying my last few days, squeezing every drop of time I can with mom, dad, my aunts and cousins. There’s still the pool and beach and Chuck E. Cheese for the kids to look forward to. And then we’ll be on that plane winging our way home. I’ll let you know when we’re back.

Happy Summer Everyone!!

Thirteen Slang Words to Use at Charity Chat Tonight!

CHARITY CHAT TONIGHT AUGUST 16TH, 9PM EST

Gabriella will pledge $1.00 for every person that comes to the chat and donate the proceeds to Freeport Humane Society.

Thirteen Puerto Rican Slang Words and Phrases

1…. Abombao! – When something has an offensive odor. You stink!

2… Perdió la chaveta/cabeza – he’s lost his head.

3… Mofongo! – a ball of mashed up green plantain. It is used like a curse word when something is messed up.

4… Está tostao – He is toasted. This is a more informal way and has to do with becoming crazy because you are burned out.

5… Borinque! – Referring to yourself as being of Puerto Rican decent.

6… Mano! - literally means hand, but it is short for hermano, which means Hey brother!

7… Miercoles! – Wednesday, a less offending phrase than Mierda, which sounds like Miercoles but means excrement.

8… Estoy mas pelao que el culo de un mono – I have no money. Translates to I have a lot of poop from the butt of a monkey.

9… Estas buena(o)! – You’re fine! (don’t forget to add in a whistle)

10.. nataio – Taino word for brothers

11.. Mi’jo(a) – abbreviation my son/daughter

12.. papi/ mami – endearment of father/mother or can be used when referring to significant other, boyfriend/girlfriend. (naughty)”Mah sexy papi” A sexy latino or black man that has lotta personality & appearance. (naughtier) Aye, papi! – “Big daddy!” said during sex.

13.. No lo encuentran ni en los centros espiritistas - comical, it can’t even be found in a spiritualist center, when things get lost.
In Puerto Rico, and in many other Latin American countries, spirituality was important to such an extent, that people believed some were able to communicated with the dead. This phrase alludes to a person being lost, and not even the witch doctor being able to find him.

PS. I’m blogging over at Samhain today too! Yup, I’m a busy girl :)

Rocking Review Wednesday!

Say You’re Mine is a novella by Sydney Somers that launches the Spellbound series. This delightful story will keep you turning pages and salivating for more. I’ve alread purchased book two, Don’t Let Go, which is novel length, and can’t wait to read it.

Say You’re Mine is a blend of romance and mystery that introduces Violet Calder, the sane family member (according to her), who comes from a long line of witches. Unfortunately, life takes a turn to the left when Violet ends up smack in the middle of a police investigation. She’s not exactly complaining since it means indulging in a light flirtation (and more) with hunky police detective Reese Prescott. It’s a relationship that can’t go anywhere since, well, she’s got this otherworldly ability that tends to freak guys out.

Reece has had the hots for Violet, but since she also has two older brothers who tend to be a pain in his butt, he’s kept a hands off attitude–until she lands at his feet. He isn’t quite sure what hits him when Violet suddenly becomes his girlfriend. Still, he can’t help enjoying the closeness. If only he could figure out what’s going on with her, because something sure doesn’t add up.

I honestly couldn’t put the story down once I started. The story flows easily, but it’s the characters that make you want to go back for more, and it isn’t just the main characters, either. A cousin and a brother show up with rather interesting talents of their own, making me curious as to their stories. The magic blends with the real world environment the author creates and the combination of humor and occasional high jinks make for a fun read that will have you demanding more.

RWA Ramblings

Okay, I usually do go off at the mouth but I have to today. Might be hormon changes due to the weather or children home 24/7 but I find myself on edge. little decisions are steeing me off.

Latest issue on my list to totally moan and groan about is RWA status. Do I want it? I had it many years ago. I used the membership to go to one conference in NJ and NY. The money was well spent. I met nice people and submitted to a few of those editors. Since then, nada. Seeing I had to change direction. I’ve let my RWA Status lapse. At this moment I am trying to figure if it is worth the money to renew. I have been advised by some to go ahead and do it. I can then go to the numerous RWA luncheons, awards, conferences, etc. Other than that what is it good for? I can’t do the monthly meetings. I can’t go to all of the conferences b/c I would then be broke. If I have RWA status and want to join the local chapters (3 in the surrounding area) then I have to pay thier fees too. Honestly, I can’t afford the time or money. Still I know they are valuable. I met some wonderful authors and editor whom of which I have a good relationship.

Now San Franscico is next summer and I want to go. Still figuring how to make my schedule work and where the money will come from to get plane tickets and accomodations, etc. Also, the local chapters have some of the best contacts in the country, (NJ, LI, NYC) Still to join all of them sets me back another $100 – $200 dollars! But if I get the contract of a lifetime b/c of a contact I made doesn’t that make up for the money I spent? Oh the dliemma!

Now some would say that I should do it for the support system and the monthly meetings. (Assuming I had time) Well, I checked the roster lists to see who are published members. Most the members write historicals. I like to read historicals once in a blue moon but I can’t even tell you the date Columbus sailed the ocean blue. Not really my cup of tea. I just don’t see this as a crowd I can get along with but I have been wrong before. I met Caridad at NJ. She writes what I write.

Now age is an issue. Only at the NJ conference did I meet a girl who was my age. Back then I was 23! Everyone else was 40+! The age doesn’t matter when talking romance but other than that we had nothing in common. It gets weird sitting w/ 50 year old women and talking about erotica or paranormals. Nothing worse than chatting about LKH and no one having a clue who that is!

I guess I will have to sit down and weigh the pros and the cons.

Would love to know what others have done when faced with the RWA choice?

13 Tropical Drinks

Thirteen Tropical Drinks

Next week I will be having a chat for my favorite charity, Freeport Humane Society. I will pledge $1.00 for every guest that comes. In celebration of Dark Waters, here are a few drinks island style to mix up before the soiree. Didn’t get your evite? Contact me.

1…. Puerto Rican Pina Colada

1 cup pineapple juice
1/2 cup cream of coconut
1/3 cup Bacardi® white rum
1 cup crushed ice

Combine ingredients in a blender. Blend until desired consistancy, pour into a Champagne Tulip and serve.

***

2… Caribeean Martini

1 1/2 oz Stoli® Vanilla vodka
3/4 oz Malibu® coconut rum
1 splash pineapple juice

Shake ingredients over ice. Pour into cocktail glass.

***

3… Mojito

3 fresh mint sprigs
2 tsp sugar
3 tbsp fresh lime juice
1 1/2 oz light rum
club soda

In a tall thin glass, crush part of the mint with a fork to coat the inside. Add the sugar and lime juice and stir thoroughly. Top with ice. Add rum and mix. Top off with *chilled* club soda (or seltzer). Add a lime slice and the remaining mint, and serve.

***

4… Captain’s Paradise

1 part Captain Morgan® Parrot Bay pineapple rum
1 part Tropicana® orange juice

Combine them how ever you want in whatever you want. I always pour the orange juice first then the rum but its up to you. This actually makes a great punch too. The ratios can be changed depending on how strong you want it, but I find this has a relatively solid balance. Both guys and girls will really enjoy this!

***

5… Pineapple Bugunda

2 cups fresh pineapples
4 tbsp brown sugar
1/2 cup light cream
6 oz white rum
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 cup crushed ice

Cut the pineapple into small pieces, enough for two cups. Combine with everything else in a blender until smooth and thick. Serve in whiskey-sour glasses and garnish with mint sprigs and maraschino cherries.

***

6…. Coquito (Rum Punch)

1/2 liter water
15 oz cream of coconut
12 oz evaporated milk
14 oz condensed milk
4 egg yolks
2 – 3 cinnamon sticks
1 liter white rum

Boil the cinnamon sticks in the water. Take the sticks out when the water is yellow and has the smell and taste of cinnamon.

Add the evaporated milk, condensed milk and egg yolks and cook at low temperature. While it’s cooking stir to avoid it sticking to the bottom of the pot. When it is boiling for a few minutes, add the cream of coconut and rum. Stir well and take off the burner.
Let it cool and it will be ready. Keep it in the refrigerator and it will last for a very long time.

***

7… Cruz Azul (shooter)

1 oz 151 proof rum
1 oz Bacardi® Limon rum
1 oz Absolut® Citron vodka
1 oz Rumple Minze® peppermint liqueur
1 oz Blue Curacao liqueur

Stir and serve in a shot glass.

***

8…. Sex with an Alligator

sweet and sour mix
Midori® melon liqueur
1/2 oz raspberry liqueur
1/2 oz Jagermeister® herbal liqueur

Add sweet and sour & Midori to a shaker w/ice, shake and strain. Layer in razzberry liqueur and jager. Razzberry should go to the bottom and jager should float on top. Works best in Martini glass.

***

9… Sex on the Beach

1 1/2 oz vodka
1/2 oz peach schnapps
2 oz cranberry juice
2 oz orange juice

Add vodka and peach schnapps to a highball glass over ice. Fill with equal measures of cranberry juice and orange juice, and stir.

***

10… Mango Daiquiri

1 oz dark rum
1/4 oz Orange Curacao liqueur
3 oz mango chunks
1 1/2 oz sweet and sour mix

Combine the rum, orange curacao, mango pieces and sour mix in a blender with one cup of crushed ice. Pour into a tall glass, garnish with a mango stick and serve.

***

1 1/2 oz peach schnapps
1 1/2 oz DeKuyper® Sour Apple Pucker schnapps

13… Coconut Kiss (non-alcoholic)

3/4 oz coconut cream
