1…. Abombao! – When something has an offensive odor. You stink! 2… Perdió la chaveta/cabeza – he’s lost his head. 3… Mofongo! – a ball of mashed up green plantain. It is used like a curse word when something is messed up. 4… Está tostao – He is toasted. This is a more informal way and has to do with becoming crazy because you are burned out. 5… Borinque! – Referring to yourself as being of Puerto Rican decent. 6… Mano! - literally means hand, but it is short for hermano, which means Hey brother! 7… Miercoles! – Wednesday, a less offending phrase than Mierda, which sounds like Miercoles but means excrement. 8… Estoy mas pelao que el culo de un mono – I have no money. Translates to I have a lot of poop from the butt of a monkey. 9… Estas buena(o)! – You’re fine! (don’t forget to add in a whistle) 10.. nataio – Taino word for brothers 11.. Mi’jo(a) – abbreviation my son/daughter 12.. papi/ mami – endearment of father/mother or can be used when referring to significant other, boyfriend/girlfriend. (naughty)”Mah sexy papi” A sexy latino or black man that has lotta personality & appearance. (naughtier) Aye, papi! – “Big daddy!” said during sex. 13.. No lo encuentran ni en los centros espiritistas - comical, it can’t even be found in a spiritualist center, when things get lost. PS. I’m blogging over at Samhain today too! Yup, I’m a busy girl |

I have to admit that I only know one language so this list was very enlightening for me. Thanks. Oh and I’ll hop on over to Samhain and say hi over there later too!

This is awesome. I wish I could speak another language other than English.

I had to read your tt aloud trying to get the pronounciation well(some has the same phonetic than french, but it is still hard!!)

What an informative and interesting TT list, Gabriella. It’s a great dialogue reference for creating a Puerto Rican character.

He he. I can tell #2′s Spanish lessons are soaking into my own brain!
Awesome list. This really rocked.

I’m so going to have to remember Mofongo! That’s just a great word!
A bit of slang that always amused me in danish is…
Jeg har fod paa lort.
It translates directly to I have my foot on the sh*t, but it means I have the situation under control. It annoys the crap outta me when my husband says it, because it is just soo lame!

8… Estoy mas pelao que el culo de un mono
How can this not be everyone’s favorite?
Comment
I love hearing slang in other languages. I wonder if English slang sounds as colorful to them…

What a fun list! #8 cracked me up. It’s always fun to know the literal meanings of colloquial phrases in other languages!
Happy T13, and thanks for visiting mine!

And I thought I’d get no use out of my rusty high school Spanish skills. But I’m pretty sure I pronounced at least ten out of thirteen correct.
And your a Samhellion too, so glad to have found you.

this was an awesome post Gabriella! I love learning new words. A few of these i knew but several i didn’t. Muy bien!

I read the title wrong first and thought these were going to be cuss words. Then I come across #5, and think “WHAT?” Checked back at the top. Okay, so no cuss words. Then I read #8 which isn’t really a cuss word, but the translation still has me cracking up.

Dang, forgot to tell you. The dragon tattoo is one from the photographer Walter Kurtz.

Thanks for this fun list. I am dying to learn Spanish and French. I particularly appreciated #5: Borinque! – Referring to yourself as being of Puerto Rican decent.
You hear it in the hook of hip-hop songs, etc. but I couldn’t figure out exactly what the word was or how to spell it. I feel like the light bulb went on over my head. LOL.
Congrats on your new book. I will definitely try to check out some of your upcoming events.
I’ve added you to my TT list here:

So glad my office has a door because here I sit, sounding out each word – and destroying them badly, I’m sure!
Thanks for the lesson in PR slang!!

This is a fun list, Gariella. I’m doing a WF with four protagonists. I might make one of the woman be from Puerto Rican descent. I can use some of these phrases. Especially # 3 and 8.
