I’ve often wondered why I write romantic suspense—maybe because I’ve been asked the question more than once in interviews. And my answer is always that I’m a romance and a mystery lover from way back, and for me romantic suspense combines the giddy falling-in-love sensation with the ice cube chills up and down my spine. Now that’s an unbeatable combination.

But in real life, would I want to be the heroine of one of my books? HELL NO! I’m the biggest chicken alive. No, I wouldn’t go into that dark room to investigate that scary noise. Not me. I’d have my bedroom door locked, the chest of drawers pulled in front of it in no time flat, and call 911 at the same time.

Yes, sir. That’s me. Let the authorities take care of it…or whatever or whoever the heck is prowling around outside.

As for those alpha heroes I love to read about. Would I put up with one? NOPE! I’m the stubborn, independent woman (okay, chicken) who would, as I’ve been told, “argue with a fence post.”

Alpha hero and I would kill each other before the first spark of romance was lit. Not a good way to start a real life romance.

So, I content myself with writing about those women who are braver than I, like Miranda Raines from LOVE ON THE RUN, who fears flying, but gets on a plane anyway to keep her young son safe, or kick-ass Sheriff Rilla Devane who tries to find her father’s killer while guarding her heart only to lose it to her prime suspect.

Miranda and Rilla are as different as night and day, but they have one thing in common. They have to learn to give their hearts and entrust their very lives to someone else.

A romance played out in the arena of life-or-death is much the sweeter when the barriers fall and the battle is won.
