Heart of the Nile Cover

Is this gorgeous or what? Cobblestone’s cover artist, Chris, got the image I wanted on the first try. I couldn’t be happier. Heart of the Nile mixes Egyptian mythology with a cats vs. dog theme (think Bast vs. Anubis) and plenty of romance and suspense. This story will be released February 29th through Cobblestone’s Shifter’s line, so expect me to blog more about. Also, in honor of the release I will be holding a contest (details to come).

You know how things just fall into place? Well, I had to go into Tokyo to a bookstore last Friday and as I was leaving the store I noticed an elderly gentleman standing near a table he’d set up with Egyptian jewelry and knick knacks. I couldn’t resist, I picked up a silver ring with various Egyptian symbols carved on it, such as the ones gracing the cover of Heart of the Nile. Apparently, this man visits Egypt once a year, buys these various Egyptian handicrafts and then brings them back to Tokyo to sell at the major bookstores in the city. Today, I went back to find his daughter manning the table. I picked up a pendant that I am going to ask a Japanese friend to make a chain for, which some lucky winner will win at the end of this month.

So stay tuned and check back!!

Got the Job!

I had an interview Saturday for a full time teaching position at the university down the road. I faced three faculty members as they asked me about my teaching philosophy, experience and ability to get students enthused. I was competing with ten others for two positions. It has been years since I had to do a real interview. I couldn’t even be bothered to dig up my old suits. Even if I found them I realized I didn’t have any shoes to go with them anymore!

I got a phone call last night to learn I unofficially got the job and I got official confirmation this morning in an email. They thought I was terrific, a “can do” person as they put it. I wasn’t sure about going for this position, but all my family and friends told me I was nuts not to try. Now that I have it, I’m excited. It’s only mornings and four days a week, so it gives me plenty of time to keep writing, yet still gets me out of the house and around people.

The Japanese school year doesn’t begin until April, so I have time before my life changes and I try this new hat on of being a professor of English as a foreign language. I’m nervous, but looking forward to this. I have to say 2008 is turning out pretty good from where I’m standing right now. :-)

What is the hidden meaning behind your name?

I think I saw this a week or so back on the Midnight Moon Cafe. I thought it looked like fun and decided to try with my real name (not my pen name). I was suprised to get an answer. I have one of those names that just doesn’t make it on a key chain or a coffee mug. I thought the second paragraph and the last two sentences were rather spot on. As for the rest, I think I want to argue about that. :-) Go on and check out the hidden meaning behind your name. It’ll make you laugh or snort, but you will be entertained.

What Patrizia Means

You are influential and persuasive. You tend to have a lot of power over people.
Generally, you use your powers for good. You excel at solving other people’s problems.
Occasionally, you do get a little selfish and persuade people to do things that are only in your interest.

You are usually the best at everything … you strive for perfection.
You are confident, authoritative, and aggressive.
You have the classic “Type A” personality.

You are a seeker. You often find yourself restless – and you have a lot of questions about life.
You tend to travel often, to fairly random locations. You’re most comfortable when you’re far away from home.
You are quite passionate and easily tempted. Your impulses sometimes get you into trouble.

You are wild, crazy, and a huge rebel. You’re always up to something.
You have a ton of energy, and most people can’t handle you. You’re very intense.
You definitely are a handful, and you’re likely to get in trouble. But your kind of trouble is a lot of fun.

You tend to be pretty tightly wound. It’s easy to get you excited… which can be a good or bad thing.
You have a lot of enthusiasm, but it fades rather quickly. You don’t stick with any one thing for very long.
You have the drive to accomplish a lot in a short amount of time. Your biggest problem is making sure you finish the projects you start.

You are incredibly wise and perceptive. You have a lot of life experience.
You are a natural peacemaker, and you are especially good at helping others get along.
But keeping the peace in your own life is not easy. You see things very differently, and it’s hard to get you to budge.

Thirteen Things I Wanted to Be When I Grew Up

I don’t know what got me started on this. Maybe hearing my son say he’s debating between being a ninja and a space ranger. (Can we say too much Power Rangers? ;-) ) But last night as I lay in bed, I thought about all the jobs that crossed my mind–some serious, some not–as I grew up. This is only a partial list too. I see this as healthy. I think my husband sees this as flakiness. LOL! What do you think?

1…. Flight Attendant–of couse it was still stewardess then. And I can remember the first grade picture book that had all the pictures and the stewardess had on a blue uniform. I liked the fact that she could fly anywhere. I wanted to do that.
2…. Wonder Woman–The woman knocked me to their knees in more ways than one. What wasn’t there to like?
3…. Buffy–But then I grew up and met Buffy. Wonder Woman, alas, had to go. Buffy could kick major butt and barely break a sweat. Besides, she got to hang with Angel and Spike. So, yeah, wanting to be Buffy had serious potential.
4…. Quicny–no laughing, please. Yes, there was a brief time, when being a forensic examiner seemed way cool. With CSI still hot, forensics still seems fascinating. In Quincy’s case, I discovered you had to take a saw to a corpse and that basically killed that idea for me. Dead bodies, body fluids, um, there’s got to be something else.
5…. Doctor I did consider medicine. I liked school and studying. But you need to be able to deal with blood and pain to be a doctor. It didn’t take much soul searching to know that wasn’t for me, at all.
6…. Model–I think every girl runs up against the glamour machine. It doesn’t take long to realize it’s a world of illusion, where the false is given more importance than reality. And let’s face it, no way was this bod going to fit in any of those slinky outfits. So modeling got jettisoned pretty quickly.
7…. P.I.–So, Rockford got beat up quite a bit. Check out Remington Steele. Who wouldn’t want to work with a mysterious guy that looked like Pearce Brosnan?
8…. Cruise Ship Director–C’mon. Tell me you didn’t watch the Love Boat and think Julie had the coolest job. Thing was, I couldn’t quite figure out how one became a cruise director. They didn’t seem to list that in any of the college guides.
9…. Professor–This was one of my more serious considerations. I majored in Spanish and gave serious thought to pursuing a Masters and PhD to teach at the college level. I just wasn’t keen on all the emphasis on publishing that university teaching requires.
10…. Journalist–I think if I had attended a large university with a journalism program, I may well have ended up in that field. I went to a liberal arts college and headed in a different direction. But, I’ve always had a love of the written word.
11…. Bilingual Education teacher–With my major in Spanish and my experience teaching in Japan, I did consider pursing a Masters that would qualify me for bilingual education. California, though, was restructuring its programs as were many states and the status of the field was too uncertain. I suppose if I’d really wanted to do it, I would have gone for it. But, again, I made a different choice.
12…. Lawyer–For a long time in high school, I really thought I would go on to be a lawyer. Instead, I got an MBA. What was I thinking?
13….Writer–I devoured books as a child. Authors seemed like these magical people who could create these fantastic stories. I always ended up in writing endeavors like the yearbook or college newspaper, but writing fiction seemed to belong to “other” people. It took a long time to realize I had it in me to create stories that readers would like to read. I may be late coming to the game, but I can honestly say that I’ve finally found my fit.

Tell me what you wanted to be when you grew up.

New Year Day Sunrise in Japan

One of my English students took this picture from his balcony. For many Japanese it’s traditional to wake up and watch the sunrise on New Year’s Day and then to go to a local shrine to make their prayers and wishes for the New Year.

Thirteen Resolutions for 2008

Happy New Year and Happy Thursday Thirteen!

I had to use this image again because I’m still feeling all bubbly and I want that feeling to carry over through the year. I’ve got lots of plans and I’m thinking BIG! I came up with a set of New Year’s Resolutions that I’m going to do my best to stick to because I want this year to be even better than 2007 (and 2007 was pretty good to me.)

Personal Resolutions

1…. Balance my time (family, work and leisure)
2…. Get organized (I am always disorganized. That gene skipped me.)
3…. Lose those last 5 pounds (or is it a multiple of five? ;-) )
4…. Make new friends
5…. Keep old friends (I need to do a better job staying in touch)
6…. Live harmoniously

Writing Resolutions
7…. Finish Tears of the Nile
8…. Write and finish Blood of the Nile
9…. Get my next ICE project going and aim for a spring submission
10…. Revise first three chapters and plot out the rest of my paranormal novel
11…. Stick to a writing schedule as much as possible (this is a tough one)
12…. Save money for RWA Nationals in San Francisco this year!
13….Promote! Promote! Promote!

I don’t have the greatest track record on resolutions, but I’m going to give these my best shot. At the very least, when Dec. 31, 3008 rolls around, I want to be able to look back and feel good about what I accomplished and know that even if I didn’t meet every goal that I gave them all my very best effort.

So how about you? What are your resolutions?
