Sorry for the delayed post. I think I’m coming down with something. I went straight to bed last night after I got home and didn’t get my post done.
Yesterday in class I was talking movies with my university students–all kids born in the 1990s. Yes, makes me wince, too. Anyway, I asked them what was the scariest movie they had seen. A lot of them named SAW. I couldn’t make it through a clip on YouTube. From what I can tell it’s all about cutting off body parts.
In all honesty, I don’t watch horror movies. What can … Read More »

When I began writing in the m/m genre (m/m, in my view, being somewhat distinct from gay fiction proper) it was dominated by women, often straight women, who generally came from a fan fiction background. In fact, one of the only gay men, certainly one of the most influential, was (and still is) the reviewer Teddy Pig. TP offered a rare and insightful perspective, and frequently brought up the fact that even if m/m fiction was a sub-genre of romance, it had a responsibility to address issues of importance to the gay community. Or at least not pretend that such … Read More »

I am so happy to introduce Jeff Erdmann.
I’ve known Jeff for a few years now. He is a magnificent musician and teacher. Jeff is also the person that did the awesome music for my Out of the Shadows trailer.
Not only is Jeff talented, he is one of the sweetest people I know. He was recently interviewed on The Jazz Hour Show this past Saturday on WFTE.
Scroll down and click on the link to listen.

“Even if it should actually turn out to be just a phase, which might or might not be the case, it doesn’t matter. Who you are right now, and the things you desire right now, are absolutely fine and okay and much more normal than you could possibly imagine.” – Hanne Blank
Most of our characters are comfortably bisexual. Not all, but I’d definitely say a majority. Tal, Vanya, and Kellen, from The Slipstream Con, are all bi. Ducks, from The Balance of Silence is bi, though people seem to lump him into the “gay for you” category … Read More »

There’s an interesting article over at the New York Daily News: Latina authors explore Santería and other Afro-Caribbean religions. For anyone who wants to read stories about Santería or who is in New York City and can attend a book signing/reading, click on the article above for more information.
When I decided to set my first book, Dark Waters, on Vieques, a tiny island off of Puerto Rico, I knew that I needed to include Santería in the storyline. In fact, my heroine Frankie’s aunt is not only a believer in this Afro-Caribbean religion, she is also a … Read More »

I LOVE BARNEY!!
Yes, I admit it. I am huge fan of Neil Patrick Harris and his amazing performance on How I Met Your Mother. No one does it better than NPH when it comes to playing a completely loveable womanizing jerk named Barney.
There is something about him and it might have to do with his big ears and lopsided grin.
One thing is for certain, he has come a long way since Doogie Howser (which I have toadmit I used to like that show too, even if it was completely far fetched).
No matter that he is OUT… Read More »

Bi Any Other Name
Greetings, Kittens!
Happy LGBTQ History Month! Hopefully you’ll have your choice of blogs chronicling the struggles and triumphs in the LGBTQ community over the next weeks, so you don’t need that here today. Instead, I thought I’d use this lovely opportunity Gabriella provided, to go back and give a little more depth on the terms I used on my last visit. (Xakara’s Blog on Writing from the Middle: Bi/Pan/Poly)
There’s some back and forth in the community over the use of the term Pansexual. Why a new term, when Bisexual would do? Now if … Read More »

Today with a great deal of anticipation, Sweden’s Nobel Committee announced the winner of the 2011 Nobel Prize in Literature. It went to 80 year old Swedish poet Tomas Tranströmer.
It’s been a very long time since I immersed myself in poetry. I majored in Spanish in college, so at one time I was hip deep in Spanish and Latin American poets. Poetry was often a struggle for me. Poets deliberate over and over to get the precise word to convey just the right image. In turn, the reader often must ponder and weigh the meanings behind each word as … Read More »
