Japan’s Kohaku: Red vs. White

The first time I experienced New Year’s in Japan, it was a bit of a shocker. I was invited to spend the holiday at a friend’s house. On New Year’s Eve we sat in the living room and watched TV. All evening long a parade of singers came out on NHK, Japan’s public broadcasting channel. It ended about a quarter to midnight and then the station switched to a famous temple where they were ringing a large bell, counting down to the new year. Where were the noisemakers? Happy New Year 2012!
