Thirteen Names for a Latina Heroine

Well, I’m working on my next book and I’m getting hung up on the name for my heroine. She’s Latina and she’s gutsy. She’s in a situation over her head, but in the name of family, she’ll tough it out. I’m tired of calling her “h” for heroine in my plotting notes. So, I’ve come up with a list of names. I do have a favorite I’m leaning towards. I’ve also rejected a few. Like stepping into a dress that you know is “the one,” I’m waiting for that punch of recognition that this

Thirteen Things about Being Green
Major reality check the other night when I saw a news report on the drought in Melbourne, Australia. They showed a family in which each person could hop in the shower for only three minutes, then out. The shower curtain was hung over a bucket to catch every last drop. Water from the gutters on the house was recycled in a tank. And around the neighborhood, officials with vests sporting Water Patrol across the back checked to see that everyone followed strict curfew rules or slapped residents with a fine.

Thirteen Reasons Spring is in the Air

Another Thursday has come by and I’ve survived almost one week of spring break with the kids. You can see what I’m talking about in the post below and while you’re at it, check out the interviews with Caridad Pineiro and Vivi Anna if you haven’t already.

So, Spring is on the way. The weather is close to 20C (almost 70F for you non-metric folks ) and I went outside today without–gasp!–a jacket. The signs have been piling up for a while now but in case you have any doubts, here are my thirteen reasons why Spring is in the … Read More »

Spring Break

It’s that time of year again. For the next two plus weeks I have three kids underfoot as we wait for the new school year to begin. (It’s an April to March school year in Japan). Already I’ve grooved a few more lines in my forehead as I try to figure out what we’re going to do to stay entertained and out of my hair.

I have to renew my oldest son’s passport which is always fun–Not. At least he’s big enough to sit on the passport photo seat in the booth at the U.S. Embassy. I had to prop … Read More »

Thirteen trips Down Nostalgia Lane

A friend of mine does lots of arts articles for the paper. I ran into her as she was on the way to do an interview with the writer of such greats as All in the Family and the Odd Couple (least that’s what she said). He was in town for a play of his that was being put on and she got the assignment to talk to him about it.

Now I happen to remember those shows, which got me to thinking about all the other shows that were reruns but which I watched

It saddens me to announce that this is the end of the Thursday Thirteen. The idea apparently came about as a way to encourage blog readers and writers to visit other sites they may not know about. I had a blast dropping by some of the visitors who found their way here as well as checking out new sites.

Though TT ends, I will still be blogging. Stay tuned. I have a few ideas of how to again liven up the place. Please don’t be come a stranger.

So for my last list, I’ve decided to focus on authors I
